The 21-year old scored the opening goals of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign with two against Wrexham in Wednesday’s 5-0 friendly win.
Afterwards he talked up his hopes of staying and staking a claim for a first team place but Mail Sport understands Forest are making a concerted effort to sign the Holland U21 international ahead of competition from Burnley and West Ham.
Maatsen, who enjoyed a successful campaign on loan at Burnley last season, played as a left winger against Wrexham and faces competition from Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella for the left-back berth.
Forest are eager to bring him in to solve their problem at left-back after they declined to take up an option to sign Renan Lodi from Atletico Madrid. The Brazilian has subsequently joined Marseille.
