OFFICIAL: Dusan Tadic leaves Ajax as free agent

Dusan Tadic will leave Ajax with immediate effect. The club has honoured the player’s request to terminate his current contract. The Serb’s contract at Ajax ran until June 30, 2024, but will now end immediately.

Tadic was born on November 20, 1988, in Bačka Topola, in former Yugoslavia. The attacker transferred from the English Southampton in 2018. On July 25, 2018, he made his debut for Ajax during the match Ajax – Sturm Graz (2-0), in the second qualifying round of the Champions League.

In his first season at Ajax in 2018/2019, the captain won the double and played an important role in the European campaign that ended in the semi-final of the Champions League. In 2019, he won the Johan Cruijff Shield. In 2020, the season got suspended due to COVID and Ajax ended on top of the league, and continued to win the championship again in the two following seasons. His total number of championships in the Netherlands comes to three. He won the Dutch Cup twice (2019 and 2021).

Besides that, he won several individual prizes as an Ajax player. He was awarded the Dutch Player of the Year award in the season he made his debut. Tadic played 241 matches for Ajax, in which he scored 105 goals.

Sven Mislintat: “Dusan told us he wanted to terminate his contract in Amsterdam. Since his arrival in 2018, he has shown how important he is to the team and how he is a true leader, both on and off the pitch. Last season, his statistics were incredible and he has not missed a single Eredivisie match since his transfer to Amsterdam. The fact that he’s leaving is an incredible loss for Maurice Steijn and his staff. We would have loved to keep him but we respect his request and wish him all the best for the rest of his career. Ajax have been in contact with him regarding the next step in his career when it comes to coaching, and we have let him know that he will always be welcome.”

Dusan Tadic: “The decision to leave the club has been a very hard one to make. However, I believe this is the right moment. I think it’s right for not only me but also the club to make a new start. The time I have had at Ajax and the successes we have celebrated give me an indescribable feeling that I have never experienced in my career before. I would like to thank all the fans for the wonderful time I have had here. If it’s up to me, this is not a final goodbye. I will forever be an Ajax player and hope to return to Amsterdam soon, in a different role as coach.”
